Jim Roache, a captain in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Tuesday announced his candidacy for a seat on the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education.

Roache, who has a law degree from Western State University College of Law, said that legal issues including voluntary integration, drug abuse on campus and employee relations will “highlight the board’s agenda in the coming years.” He said that no current school board member has formal legal training.

Roache is one of four people to take out applications for the District B school board seat being vacated by Larry Lester, a county registrar of voters spokesman said Wednesday. The district includes San Carlos, Del Cerro, Tierrasanta, Mira Mesa and other communities.

Four others, including incumbent Kay Davis, have taken out applications for the District C seat, the only other seat up for election this year. The district covers the southwestern section of the city, including Point Loma and Linda Vista.

The filing deadline for the races is March 7.
