College Baseball : San Diego’s Two Big Innings Prove Too Much for UC Irvine

The University of San Diego scored four runs in the sixth inning and seven in the eighth en route to a 14-4 nonconference victory over UC Irvine Tuesday at Irvine.

The Anteaters (4-3) took a short-lived 3-2 lead in the fifth when Tom Baine scored on Gene Roumimper’s double.

The Toreros (4-0-1) tied the score, 3-3, in the sixth on Sean Baroj’s lead-off home run. Robbie Roberts scored on John Bonilla’s triple, and Bonilla scored when John Holt singled to center. Holt scored on David Jacas’ double.

Baroj hit a bases-loaded triple in the eighth, as the Toreros opened a big lead. Irvine pitchers walked four and hit a batter in the eighth.

Tom Sizer (3-0) allowed seven hits and four runs in eight innings. He struck out four. Irvine’s Craig Brink (2-1) was the losing pitcher.

In other games:

Southern California College 7, La Verne 1--Kevin Kasper and Jim McCahill hit home runs to lead the Vanguards (4-0) at home. SCC pitcher Brian Sullivan (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out seven.

Chapman 9, La Verne 5--Mike Cruz went 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs to lead Chapman College to a win over La Verne in a night game at Hart Park.

The Panthers scored three runs in the first inning with Cruz getting the first of his three RBIs.

Steve Dunn (2-1) was the winning pitcher for Chapman (3-5). Tim Well (0-1) took the loss for La Verne (1-4).

Christ College Irvine 6, Whittier College 2--Steve Hantula went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Eagles (4-2) in a nonconference win at Whittier. Winning pitcher John Shinkus (2-0) struck out seven.

San Diego Mesa 2, Saddleback 1--The Olympians (2-0) took advantage of shoddy fielding and pitching by the Gauchos (0-1) to get this nonconference win at Saddleback. The Olympians scored the winning run in the fifth on a two-out walk, a balk and a RBI single by Steve Fletcher. Winning pitcher John Oswalt (1-0) struck out five and allowed four hits in eight innings. Losing pitcher John Sinclair (0-1) struck out 12.

Golden West 8, Cal Poly Pomona JVs 0--George Lazalde and Chris Damato provided plenty of offense for Rustlers. Lazalde was 2 for 4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and a stolen base. Damato was 3 for 4 with a RBI and scored three runs.

Rancho Santiago 5, USC JVs 0--Freshmen Bob Brucato went 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple. Brucato, Times Player of the Year at Mission Viejo High School last season, had two RBIs and scored a run. Mike Sanders (1-0) was the winning pitcher.

San Bernadino 7, Fullerton 3--The Indians (3-1) scored three runs in the fifth and three in the ninth to win this nonconference game at Fullerton. Winning pitcher Tom Lavursky struck out five batters in eight innings. Fullerton is 0-2.
