Share

Young musicians concerts predominate this weekend:

Five winners of the Orange Coast Cities Branch of the Music Teachers Assn. of California will appear with the Saddleback Symphony Orchestra conducted by Barry Silverman in a mammoth concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in the college’s McKinney Theatre.

Soloists will include four pianists--Esther Kim of El Toro, Susan Kim of Cerritos, Steve Lee of Irvine and Allison Lee of Whittier--and violinist Karen Mallannao of Mission Viejo.

Esther Kim, a junior at El Toro High School, will play two movements from Mozart’s Concerto No. 27 in B-flat, K. 595. Susan Kim, a sophomore at Cerritos High School, will play the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Steve Lee, a fifth-grader at Santiago Hills Elementary School, will be soloist in Haydn’s Concerto in C. Allison Lee, a seventh-grader at Carden School, will play the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17 in G, K. 453. Karen Mallannao, a freshman at Capistrano Valley High School, will play the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.

Saddleback College has co-sponsored this annual competition since 1979. There are no cash awards, but the competition affords young artists the chance to play in public.

The Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform under two conductors in its 4 p.m. concert Sunday at Chapman College. David R. Warble, conductor of the Disneyland Band, will lead the 90-member ensemble in Shostakovich’s “Festival” Overture, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 2 (with soloist April Moriarty), excerpts from Stravinsky’s “Firebird” and the last movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

John Koshak, the orchestra’s music director, will conduct Barber’s Adagio for Strings and the first movement of Vasili Kalinnokov’s Symphony No. 1.

This is the 16th season of the Youth Symphony. Members range in age from 13 to 22.

The North Orange County Community Concert Assn. is holding its annual membership drive in anticipation of its 41st concert season, which begins in September.

Founded in 1946, the Fullerton association, which presents four concerts each year in Fullerton, is part of a consortium of about 700 separate associations throughout the United States.

It also offers members reciprocity privileges that allow them to attend concerts presented by any other association without charge, on a space-available basis. There are about 20 community concert associations within driving distance of the north Orange County area.
