Oceanside
The state Coastal Conservancy agreed Thursday to provide Oceanside with a $1.6-million loan to help the city rebuild its storm-battered pier.
Meeting in Oceanside, the conservancy’s board members voted unanimously to assist with the $4-million reconstruction. City officials said the 8% loan will be repaid over eight years beginning in July, 1987, the completion date of the project.
The city is spending nearly $1 million in developers’ fees to rebuild the wooden pier, considered pivotal to its efforts to boost tourism, and is receiving money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a state disaster relief fund, and the state Wildlife Conservation Board.
Renovation of the concrete base of the municipal pier, the longest of its kind on the West Coast when it was built in 1947, is under way. Demolition of the wooden portion will begin in April. When completed, the pier will be 1,600 feet long.
