NHL Roundup : North Stars Defeat Nordiques for First Time in 2 Years

Scott Bjugstad scored a goal and added an assist at Minnesota as the North Stars defeated Quebec, 5-2, Friday night at Bloomington, Minn., for their first win over the Nordiques in two years.

Bjugstad scored his 32nd goal of the season and ignited a spurt of three straight Minnesota goals in the third period to erase Quebec’s 1-0 lead.

Quebec, losing its third straight game, remained tied with Montreal for first place in the Adams Division.

The victory brought Minnesota, 25-26-9, to within one point of second-place St. Louis in the Norris Division.

Brian Bellows had one assist to extend his point-scoring string to a team-record 20 straight games--the longest current streak in the league.

Calgary 4, Vancouver 0--Joel Otto scored two goals and rookie netminder Mike Vernon recorded his first NHL shutout at Vancouver.

Vernon stopped 24 shots, including breakaways in each period, as the Canucks outshot the Flames 24-21.

Vancouver failed to score on seven power plays.

The Canucks remained in fourth place in the Smythe Division, one point behind the Kings.

Pittsburgh 7, Detroit 3-- Mike Bullard scored three goals and Mario Lemieux added two at Detroit as the Penguins extended their unbeaten streak to six straight games (5-0-1).

The Red Wings have lost six straight games.

With his two goals, Lemieux set a club record by running his scoring streak to 17 consecutive games. Lemieux, last year’s NHL Rookie of the Year, has 14 goals and 24 assists during his 17-game streak.

Buffalo 5, N.Y. Islanders 1--John Tucker scored twice and Phil Housley added three assists as at Buffalo as the Sabres snapped a four-game winless streak.

Housley set up the first three goals for Buffalo as the Sabres put 20 shots on Islander goalie Billy Smith in the first period on their way to a 3-1 lead.

The victory gave the Sabres 62 points and moved them into third place in the Adams Division, one point ahead of the Boston Bruins.

Chicago 5, Winnipeg 2--Troy Murray and Denis Savard, having the best seasons in their careers season of his career, scored third-period goals at Winnipeg to lead the Blackhawks.

Murray, one of the league’s premier defensive centers who has developed into an offensive force, scored his 37th goal of the season to break a 2-2 tie 83 seconds into the final period. Murray jammed Curt Fraser’s rebound under a sprawling Winnipeg goaltender Brian Hayward.

Savard reached 40 goals for the first time in his career at 11:23 when he converted Steve Larmer’s rebound from a scramble in front of the goal.
