Fullerton : Festival to Promote Young Artists’ Work

If you have ever told someone to “go fly a kite,” you may get your wish March 16 at the 11th annual Florence Arnold Children’s Art Festival to be held at the Muckenthaler Cultural Center.

Kicking off the festival this year will be a kite-flying contest, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on the hill on the west side of the center. “Colors in the Wind” will be the theme of the contest, said Joe Felz, the city’s community services supervisor.

Participating Fullerton students in kindergarten through the eighth grade are invited to build, decorate and fly their own kites. Felz said the city will provide the materials needed to build the kites, including frames, tissue paper for the covering, string and tails.

The purpose of the festival, developed by Fullerton artist Florence Arnold and the Muckenthaler Center Circle, is to promote the involvement of young people in the arts. Students are encouraged to submit drawings, paintings, macrame projects, weavings, collages, matted photos, mosaics or ceramics. A prize will be awarded for each grade.

Felz said all works will be displayed at the center through April 6.

A “Young Composers Concert,” which begins at 3 p.m., will highlight the festival activities. The concert will feature students in grades one through eight from Fullerton, Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Yorba Linda, Placentia and La Habra.

Those wishing to submit artworks to the art festival can obtain entry forms from the center, 1201 W. Malvern Ave., or by calling the center at (714) 738-6595. The center’s hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
