Cal State Fullerton Hitters Enjoy Field Day Against California, 14-8

Cal State Fullerton had 16 hits Saturday, six for extra bases, to beat California, 14-8, in a nonconference baseball game in front of 750 fans at Titan Field.

Fullerton (8-3), ranked 10th in the country, won two of the three games this weekend over Cal (10-3), ranked eighth. The Titans’ 14 runs Sunday was their most productive since they scored 11 runs in the season-opening win over St. Mary’s.

The middle of the Fullerton batting order--Pat Garman, John Eccles, Ken Garcia and Tony Trevino--did the most damage. Garman went 2 for 4 with five runs batted in. He had a three-run double and a two-run triple.

Eccles, who has hit safely in all but one of Fullerton’s games, was 3 for 5 with a double and one RBI. Garcia, who drew seven walks in the last two games of the series, hit a two-run home run and scored four runs. Trevino also had a two-run homer and scored twice.

The Titans play Chapman College Tuesday in a 2:30 game at Hart Park in Orange and then travel to Austin, Texas to meet No. 1-ranked Texas in a three-game series beginning Friday.

In community college action:

Palomar 4, Golden West 1--Rustler Coach Fred Hoover was deprived of his 400th career win in the nonconference game at Palomar. Golden West pitchers struck out 13 and gave up only three hits but Palomar (2-1) scored three runs in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Dean Douty (0-1) pitched five innings for the Rustlers (2-2) and had 11 strikeouts. Hoover will go for win No. 400 Wednesday when Golden West plays host to Grossmont at 2:30 in the first round of the Cypress-Golden West Tournament.

In the College of the Sequoias Tournament:

Orange Coast 16, College of the Sequoias 9--Left fielder Joey James went 3 for 4 with two homers, a double and six RBIs and catcher Paul Ellison had a home run, two doubles and five RBIs as the Pirates knocked the Giants (4-2) out of the losers’ bracket. Jim Brennan (1-0) went the distance and struck out five.

Fresno City 7, Orange Coast 4--The Pirates, who rallied from a 5-0 deficit to close to within 5-4, left 12 men on base in the championship game.
