San Diego College Baseball : USD Coach Misses Chance for 500th Win, Loses, 12-1

San Diego State’s Jim Dietz is still the only baseball coach in San Diego with 500 career victories. At least for now, that is.

Dietz’s Aztecs beat the University of San Diego, 12-1, Wednesday night in a nonconference game at Smith Field to deny USD Coach John Cunningham his 500th-career win. Cunningham will get another shot today when the Toreros (7-2-1) play at UC Riverside.

Meanwhile, Dietz, who got his 500th win two years ago, won his 616th-career game Wednesday. SDSU is now 4-2.

“I’m sure Fred will get No. 500 real soon,” Dietz said. “I’m just glad he didn’t get it against us. It really is great to have coaches like him in San Diego that have been around so long to achieve milestones like that.”

Cunningham, in his 23rd season at USD, has now lost 491 games to go along with the 499 wins. He said he wants to make sure he wins No. 500 before he loses that many.

“We still have a few games left to play with them,” he said. “Maybe the kids were thinking about it tonight. We didn’t play a very good game.”

The Aztecs scored five runs in the first inning Wednesday, the final two on second baseman Steve Hill’s bases-loaded single. Hill added a two-run homer in the seventh inning as SDSU totaled 15 hits.

Meanwhile, Richard Holsman (1-0) pitched a complete-game six-hitter. Holsman struck out 10, walked three and allowed only an unearned run in the fifth inning.
