After more than six miles of running and crawling through chest-deep ponds of mud, about 1,200 dirty Marines and civilians scrambled across the finish line in the sixth annual Volkslauf (people’s run) at the Tustin Marine Corps base Friday.

All proceeds from the $20 registration fee for entrance in the annual mud run are donated to the Orangewood shelter for abused and battered children.

Entrants were required to wear combat boots as they ran the first two miles of the race on flat ground. For the second two miles, six-person teams crossed deep mud and crawled under obstacles. The final stretch involved another two-mile run.

The 350 teams were required to cross the finish line with at least five of the original six members.

Winners of this year’s mud scramble were U.S. Navy Seals from Coronado, who finished the race in 42 minutes, 33 seconds.
