New Orleans City Councilman Sidney Barthelemy easily defeated state Sen. William Jefferson to win election as the city’s mayor after a bitter runoff campaign between the two black Democrats that involved threats of violence on both sides. With all of the city’s polling places reporting, Barthelemy had 93,054 votes and Jefferson had 67,668. Voters also elected two blacks to the City Council, giving blacks a majority on the seven-member body for the first time.
