An increase in the number or regular season games to 18 from 16 that is aimed at stimulating divisional rivalries in 1986 highlights a record 81-game Canadian Football League schedule announced last week.

The regular season--following a record-low nine-game exhibition schedule--begins June 24, the only Tuesday game of the year, at Calgary and ends Nov. 9.

The Stampeders will play host to their Western Division rivals, the Edmonton Eskimos, on opening day.

The 1986 CFL schedule also will feature more Thursday and Friday night games.

Each club will play six CFL rivals twice with the balance made up of three games apiece against two divisional rivals.

There will be 17 Thursday night games this season--up from eight--of which 10 will be featured doubleheaders with one game in the East and one in the West during a 12-week span beginning June 26.

The 22 Friday night games are an increase of three over 1985. Fewer games have been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

There are 17 Saturday dates (down two) and 21 Sunday dates (down two) while the five scheduled Monday games is an increase of one for that day.
