SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Alemany Hits Harder During 16-10 Slugfest With Thousand Oaks

Alemany High scored 13 runs in the first two innings Tuesday and held on for a 16-10 nonleague victory over Thousand Oaks.

Senior left fielder Gasper Vasquez led the Indians’ 13-hit attack, going 3 for 4 with two runs and two runs batted in. Junior second baseman Randy Thompson was 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBIs.

Thousand Oaks designated hitter Ed Hall hit a grand slam in the fourth, finishing 2 for 3 with six RBIs.

Crespi 3, Westlake 1--Senior pitcher Paul Farkas (1-1) scattered six Westlake hits for the win in a consolation quarterfinal of the El Segundo tournament.

Crespi’s Ron Eustis and Drew Kempf were both 2 for 2, and catcher Randy Mehringer added a double. Crespi (2-1) had eight hits and four errors.

North Hollywood 12, Sylmar 7--Senior first baseman Peter Washington almost single-handedly beat the Spartans in an East Valley League opener. He hit a three-run homer in the first, finished with seven RBIs, and came in to pitch the sixth, stopping a fierce five-run Sylmar rally. He was 3 for 3 at the plate and picked up the save on the mound.

Buckley 20, Cal Prep 3--The Griffins pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of six Cal Prep errors to gain the nonleague win. Four Buckley players had at least three hits. Jason Weistein was 4 for 4 and had five RBIs. James Tweedie, David Lawson and Rory Cypers all had three hits. Junior pitcher Kevin Corbett scattered seven hits and struck out five to get the win.

Montclair Prep 9, St. Genevieve 3--Darrell Handelsman hit a three-run double in the sixth to break up a close 6-3 game and enable the Mounties to win their season opener. Teammate Reggie Smith was 3 for 3.

Jim Parfitt had a two-run double in the first inning for the Valiants.

Chaminade 6, Agoura 4--Senior pitcher Pablo Suarez struck out five and scattered three hits in five innings to lead the Eagles to the nonleague victory. At the plate, he collected three hits and three RBIs. Shortstop John Sunde was 4 for 5.

L.A. Baptist 8, Southern California Christian 7--Winning pitcher Mark MacArthur (1-0) tripled in Kirk Petersen in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Baptist an opening game nonleague victory.

Casey Burrill and Mark Nicks hit homers for the Knights.

Fairfax 5, Grant 2--Richard Cimadoro (1-0) pitched a four-hitter at Grant in the East Valley League opener.

Third baseman Lonell Jackson was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a double. Teammate Tae Park was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a double.

Providence 6, LA Lutheran 5--Jeff Liriloo hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the eighth to give the Pioneers a nonleague win.

Calabasas 2, Antelope Valley 1--Mike Kurinit scored on a wild pitch in the third for what proved to be the deciding run.

Camarillo 10, Rio Mesa 8--Chris Lillich, Michael Henry and Billy Saylors hit homers to help the Scorpions (4-1) to their fourth straight win. Saylors’ home run came in the sixth and broke a tie at 8.

Village Christian 5, Faith Baptist 1--The Crusaders beat the Contenders in a nonleague game. Pitcher Chris Johnson picked up his second win of the season for Village Christian (2-0).

Girls Softball

Newbury Park 3, El Camino Real 0--Debbie Dickmann, an All-Southern Section second team selection last season, pitched a complete game, striking out seven while allowing four hits.

Beth Silverman, who led the Conquistadores to the City Championship last season, took the loss, allowing only five hits and one walk in seven innings.

Newbury Park, (3-0), scored three times in the fifth on two singles and an error.

Hart 6, Saugus 0--Junior Cindy Smith upped her record to 2-1 with a 15 strikeout victory at Hart.

Smith has now recorded 37 strikeouts in 25 innings this season and has yet to allow an earned run. Sophomore catcher Angie Gorski went 2 for 3 to lead the Hart offense.

Moorpark 26, Agoura 8--Nana Barrera went 3 for 5 with a grand slam, a double and five RBIs to lead the Musketeers. Stacy Sanders was 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs, and Marlena Douglas was 4 for 5 with four RBIs.

Westchester 8, Reseda 5--Karen Packey hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lead Westchester to the non-league victory at Reseda.

The score was 4-4 after five innings, but Westchester broke the tie with an unearned run. Packey then followed with her homer to put the game out of reach.

Reseda was led by Vicki McDermott, who went 4 for 4 with a double.

St. Genevieve 3, Calabasas 1--Pitcher Regina Aguirre improved her record to 3-0 as the Valiants logged a nonleague victory.

Boys Volleyball

Kennedy def. Glendale 5-15, 15-12, 15-6, 15-13--Josh Klapow had 10 blocks to lead the Golden Cougars to a nonleague victory.
