Golf Roundup : Calcavecchia, a Caddy Last Week, Is Doral Leader at 65

Mark Calcavecchia, who worked as a caddy on the PGA Tour last week, shot a seven-under-par 65 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead in the first round of the $500,000 Doral-Eastern Open golf tournament at Miami.

Calcavecchia, a tour player for five years before losing his card last year, said: “Just having fun this year.” He caddied for close friend Ken Green in the Honda tournament last week at Coral Springs, Fla.

Tom Kite, Roger Maltbie, Tom Purtzer and Tom Sieckmann were at 66.

Marci Bozarth, who has been on the LPGA Tour only 18 months, shot a five-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Patti Rizzo, Beth Daniel and Kathy Postlewait in the Women’s Kemper Open at Princeville, Hawaii, on Kauai.

Gail Hirata of Montebello and Judy Greco of Long Beach qualified for the $250,000 GNA/Glendale Federal women’s tournament starting next Thursday at the Oakmont Country Club.

Hirata shot a 39-38--77, and Greco had a 34-35-79 as 18 golfers played for the two remaining spots in a field of 144.
