College Tennis : UC Irvine Gets First-Round Wins

UC Irvine’s Bruce Man Son Hing and Mike Cadigan won their first-round matches Thursday in the first round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena.
Man Son Hing defeated Grant Saacks of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-3, for his sixth straight win. Cadigan defeated UCLA’s Ken Diller, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Craig Miller of Cal State Long Beach defeated the Anteaters’ Art Hernandez in a first-round match, 6-3, 6-2, and the 49ers’ Kevin Gillette defeated Irvine’s James Myers, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Chapman 5, Vanderbilt 4--Troy Turnbull led the Panthers past the Commodores in a Las Vegas Invitational Tournament match at the Sands Hotel.
Turnbull defeated Jeff Berry, 6-2, 7-5, as the Panthers, the No. 1 Division II team in the nation, improved their record to 6-3. Chapman plays Weber State today.
In South Coast Conference action:
Saddleback 9, Cerritos 0--The Gauchos won their fourth straight conference match by routing the Falcons. Saddleback (4-0 in conference, 6-1 overall) will play host to Orange Coast, which is also undefeated in conference, at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
In women’s collegiate action:
Cal State Long Beach 6, UC Irvine 3--Despite a strong performance from No. 1 singles player Stephanie Rhorer, the Anteaters (10-9) were defeated by the 49ers at the Racquet Club of Irvine. Rhorer defeated Long Beach’s Havaja Frljuckic, 6-1, 6-2.
In women’s South Coast Conference action:
Fullerton 9, Cypress 0--Nichole Brechtubhl led the Hornets (4-0, 6-0) to an easy win at Cypress. Brechtubhl defeated the Chargers’ Vanessa Allen, 6-0, 6-1.
