RADWASTE ADDS UP

Math time: What do you get when you add of 100 Flowers, two out of 17 Pygmies, a gang of four percussionists plus obvious influence from the original Gang of Four? The answer is Radwaste, which lived up to its L.A. underground supergroup pedigree on Friday at the Lingerie.

The Gang of Four elements (lurching rhythms, stuttered guitar figures) didn’t dominate live as much as on the group’s recent debut record. The overall impression was much more distinctive: early punk fury with added musical sophistication for a style that would fit comfortably on a bill with Husker Du. Radwaste offered a repertoire wide enough to include Philip Glass’ theme from the film “Koyaanisqatsi” and Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll,” along with solid originals. Though four drummers rarely seemed necessary, this is a group with considerable growth potential.
