Undefeated heavyweight Mike Tyson, ranked 10th by the World Boxing Council, heeded the advice of trainer Kevin Rooney and knocked out Steve Zouski at 2:49 of the third round of a scheduled 10-rounder at Uniondale, N.Y., and extended his victory and knockout streak to 19 Monday night.

Tyson, of Catskill, N.Y., backed Zouski into a corner, where he heard Rooney holler: “This guy will go 10 rounds with you if you don’t start throwing some punches.”

Tyson, 19, promptly landed two left uppercuts and a right behind the ear, staggering the 31-year-old Zouski. He followed with a left hook and a right uppercut before landing a left hook to the head that sent Zouski sprawling to the canvas.

Zouski, of Brockton, Mass., saw his record drop to 25-10. He weighed 210 pounds. Tyson weighed 220 1/2.

Tim Witherspoon, who tested positive for marijuana after beating Tony Tubbs for the World Boxing Assn. heavyweight title, must give Tubbs a rematch within 90 days, WBA counsel James Binns said in Las Vegas.

Witherspoon was fined $25,000, but the WBA did not withdraw title recognition from him, Binns said.

The attorney said the winner of the rematch must then defend the title against top-ranked Frank Bruno of Britain within 90 days of the rematch.

Former two-time world boxing champion Bobby Chacon was sentenced in Oroville, Calif., to six months in jail for violating terms of his probation, granted in a 1984 wife-beating case.

Justice Court Judge Brian Rix delayed the commencing of sentence until Chacon’s appeal of the case is resolved.
