Boston Marathon officials have agreed to notify all participants in the April 21 race of the potential for drug testing, although a decision has not been made on whether to go ahead with the controversial program this year. It is “likely” that drug checks will be mandatory for top finishers in 1987, race administrator Guy Morse said.

BAA officials are worried about the use of endurance-enhancing drugs, such as steroids, rather than the use of cocaine or marijuana, which have been the cause of controversy in other pro sports.
