Santa Ana : School Board Trustees to Discuss County Sites

Share

Alarmed that two plots of county-owned land in the city may be used for a proposed new jail rather than as sites for new schools, the Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting tonight.

The board will vote on a district staff proposal that the school district make an offer to the county to buy its land on Fruit Street and on the southwest corner of McFadden and Grand avenues.

Diane Thomas, public information officer for the district, confirmed Thursday that the school board had previously expressed interest to the county about buying the land. She said the school district thus became concerned when there were indications that both county-owned sites are under consideration by the county as possible locations for a new jail.

The rapidly growing Santa Ana school system will need up to six new elementary schools in the next decade, according to Supt. Edward S. Krass.

The school board last Tuesday authorized negotiations for the possible purchase of the Bristol Street Baptist Church as one site for a school. The board also is looking at another existing church as a possible site for a new continuation high school site, Thomas said.

A new regular high school is already planned for the district. It will be built at Grand and McFadden avenues and is scheduled to open in 1988.
