The judge, already having dropped nine counts, considered a defense request to throw out the remainder of the sanctuary case against 11 church leaders accused of smuggling illegal aliens into the United States. As the trial in Tucson neared the end of its 19th week, U.S. District Judge Earl Carroll held a brief hearing and then retired to study his lawbooks. The defense, seeking dismissal of the entire case, alleged government prosecutor Donald Reno Jr. was guilty of misconduct for disobeying the court’s ban on news interviews.
