UCLA Leads Stanford After First Day of Pac-10 Swim Meet

Matt Biondi of California won the 50-yard freestyle Thursday and UCLA took the lead in the team standings after the first day of the Pacific 10 Conference men’s swimming and diving championships at East Los Angeles College.

Biondi was clocked in 20.12 seconds, edging Franz Mortensen of UCLA, who was clocked in 20.45. Dean Hagen of Arizona was third in 20.53.

UCLA finished the first day of the three-day competition at East Los Angeles College with 186 points. Stanford, seeking its fifth straight Pac-10 championship, was second with 179 points. Arizona State was third with 143 points.

Other individual winners Thursday were Alex Mlawsky of Arizona, who won the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:18.96 clocking, and Neil Cochran of Arizona State, who won the 200-yard individual medley in 1.47.71.

Stanford won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:14.41.
