As the 13th musher in the Iditarod sled dog race crossed the Nome, Alaska, finish line, race officials looked for another racer who disappeared somewhere between the race’s last two checkpoints.

Vern Halter of Trapper Creek was in 10th place late Thursday leaving White Mountain, 77 miles from Nome, but two mushers who had been behind him reached Nome and said they had not passed him on the trail.

Other mushers have said there are confusing side trails in the area, and a plane was sent out Friday afternoon to find out where Halter was.
