Avalon : Trash Furnace Approved

The City Council this week approved a trash burning furnace and a $2 increase in monthly residential trash collection fees for Catalina Disposal Co.

Trash is now burned in the open at a private dump outside the city. Complaints have increased about smoke and odors emanating from the dump, City Manager John Longley said.

Tom Jordahl, president of Catalina Disposal, said the furnace, which will cost nearly $90,000 a year to operate, will virtually eliminate those problems. He said the monthly rate increase from $8 to $10 is needed to pay for the furnace.

The furnace is expected to begin operating in June, with the rate increase imposed no more than 90 days before it is installed.
