Monterey Park : 3 Lawmakers Commended

Share

The Monterey Park City Council, by a 4-1 vote, has commended U.S. Rep. Matthew G. Martinez (D-Monterey Park) and U.S. Sens. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) and Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) for helping the city in its dispute with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency over development of a former dump site.

The city has appealed to the EPA in Washington to overrule its San Francisco regional office and delete 45 acres from a proposed federal Superfund list so that the property, once part of the Operating Industries landfill, can be developed. Martinez and the senators’ staffs helped the city present its case in Washington.

Councilwoman Lily Lee Chen voted against the commendations on grounds that the city should wait for an EPA decision before expressing gratitude. In addition, she said that Martinez could have done more to solve problems connected with the Operating Industries dump.
