Teachers at Glendale College Expected to Approve Contract

Share

After seven months of negotiations, Glendale Community College teachers are expected to approve a 5.5% salary increase for full-time instructors and a 6.5% raise for part-time teachers, officials said.

Agreement over terms of the new contract was reached last week. Final approval by the Glendale College Guild--which represents the school’s 350 part-time teachers and 160 full-time teachers--and the Glendale Community College District board is expected in three weeks, officials said. The previous contract expired June 30.

For full-time teachers, the new contract also provides a salary bonus equal to 1% of their annual salary. This increase, which is retroactive to July 1, covers the 1985-86 school year. The three-year contract allows for additional salary increases to be negotiated for succeeding school years.

“I can live with it,” guild President Pete Witt said of the new contract.

Teachers had originally asked for a 9.6% raise for full-time teachers and the doubling of hourly salaries for part-time teachers, who now earn between $20 and $24 an hour, Witt said. Full-time teachers now get $21,000 to $42,000 a year.

Part-time teachers are allowed to teach no more than six hours a week.
