Paramount : Teachers’ Pact Approved

Share

After eight months of negotiations, the Paramount Unified School District Board of Education gave final approval to a three-year contract with the Teachers Assn. of Paramount.

Earlier in the year both sides had agreed on the contract but were attempting to “finalize wording,” said Richard B. Caldwell, district superintendent. Last week, the Board of Education voted 4-0 for the final contract.

On Jan. 21, members of the teachers association agreed to the contract, which is for 1985 through 1988 and calls for a salary increase of 8.25% the first year, retroactive to 1985, with 6.5% coming from school funds and 1.75% from special state incentive funds. The second-year increase is the same, 6.5% from school funds with state funds expected to be between 1.45% and 1.7%. The third year calls for negotiations beginning in spring 1987. One of the elements that had held up negotiations was the association’s successful bid for binding arbitration. The raises apply to all of the district’s approximately 450 teachers. Starting salary for beginning teachers in the 11,500-student district is now $21,380.
