Two Anglers Land 30-Pound Stripers

Excellent catches of striped bass were reported at Lake Silverwood this week by landing operators. Greg Silks of Ontario and Robert Jaurique of San Bernardino both caught 30-pound stripers near the dam. Gary Sanden of Alta Loma caught a 22-pounder.

At several other Southland reservoirs, bass were the best. At Lake Castaic, Ron Grover of Northridge used a spinner bait to catch a 15-pound 6-ounce bass in 15 feet of water.

LAKE MEAD--The cold front has broken. Striped bass and largemouth bass best bets, but deep. Catfish fair to slow.

BULLHEAD CITY--On Lake Mohave, largemouth bass good. Trout deep and shallow with best results by trolling. Catfish fair. On Colorado River, trout fair. Striped bass picking up. Big catch of the week: 18-12 last Sunday. Catfish good.

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout improving near Chalk Cliffs by trolling, 10 to 20 feet deep.

LAKE CASITAS--Bass and trout best bets. Bass in shallow water, trout deep. Some pan-sized trout.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass fair, from 12 to 23 pounds.

LAKE PIRU--Water level up 45 feet. Trout and bass best bets. Bass hitting in Reasnor and San Felicia coves and east side of leg. Trout good near dam by trolling in shallow water. Catfish good at north end. Bluegills and crappie picking up.

CASTAIC LAKE--Good for bass. Dan Gillespie, Sylmar, limit of bass, largest 8-0 in upper lake. Ron Grover, Northridge, 15-6 bass, on spinner bait in 16 feet of water. Colin Waters, Topanga, limit of bass, 12-4, released. Bluegills good in lagoon. Catfish slow. Trout fair.

LAKE ISABELLA--Catfish good at night. Bass moving toward shore. Crappie and bluegills slow. Trout fair.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Otay: Good for bass. Bluegills slow. Top bass: 12-12, 7-0. San Vicente: Bass fair. Good for rainbow trout. Bluegills slow. Miramar: Rainbow trout best bet. Bass slow. El Capitan: Bass best bet. Catfish good. Sutherland: Bass fair. Top catches: 9-4, 8-0. Hodges: Bass good for lake’s opening week.

IRVINE LAKE--Water level rising. Boat launching available. Trout best bet. Trolling good along west shore. Bass good off rocky points. Crappie good in weedy areas. Catfish hitting in Santiago Flats.

LAKE IRWINDALE--Good for trout. Larry Girazard, Duarte, 5-12 trout. Victor Lowes, Baldwin Park, 5-8 trout; Steve Calligan, Baldwin Park, 5-4 trout.

VAIL LAKE--Good for bass, trout and bluegills.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Striped bass best bet. Crappie excellent near marina and Outhouse Cove. Good limits of trout reported at Cleghorn Cove. Largemouth bass picking up.

LAKE HENSHAW--Excellent for crappie. Dennis Cartwright, El Cajon, 17 crappie weighing 24 pounds, largest 2-4. Water temperature cold. Other species slow.

BISHOP AREA--Pleasant Valley Reservoir good for rainbow trout, 12-14 inches. Lower Owens River has mid-flow, fishing fair to good.
