Work Started on Toshiba Headquarters in Irvine

Construction is under way and a fall completion is planned for the $35-million Irvine headquarters facility of the Industrial Electronics Business Sector of Toshiba America Inc.

The 350,000-square-foot complex in the Irvine Spectrum will house facilities for research, development and production of medical and telecommunications systems, as well as the corporate offices of a Toshiba unit now located in Tustin. Toshiba American Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba Corp. of Japan.

Irvine Spectrum has been developed by the Irvine Co. near the junction of the Santa Ana (5) and San Diego (405) freeways as an international center for research, technology and business.

The new Toshiba facility, with initial employment of 500, marks the first time that a U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese company has undertaken the production of medical systems in this country. Toshiba America manufactures X-ray diagnostic systems, computer tomography and telephone systems.
