College Baseball : Loyola Defeats UC Irvine in 10 Innings

Loyola Marymount scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to beat UC Irvine, 10-7, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Anteater Field.

The seventh-ranked Lions rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 7-3 before getting the winning runs on a two-run home run by Chris Donnels in the 10th. Jim McAnany had a two-run double in the eighth to send the game into extra innings.

Reliever Eric Reinholtz got the win for Loyola (21-6), holding UCI scoreless over the last three innings. Doug Linton (2-3) took the loss. Ed Clark was 3 for 6 and scored two runs for the Anteaters (10-9-2), and Mike Sugar had two hits and three RBIs. The Anteaters play host to UC Santa Barbara in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. opener Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

In other nonconference action:

Cal State Fullerton 3, San Diego State 2--Andy Nieto and Larry Cratsenberg had run-scoring singles in the top of the eighth to give the Titans the come-from-behind win at Smith Field in San Diego. Alan Stankiewicz was 4 for 5 for Fullerton (20-9). Deron Johnson had two hits and one RBI for the Aztecs (14-8-1).

Fullerton’s senior right-hander Dean Yamashita got his first win of the season, and Larry Casin pitched two shut out innings to earn his second save. Matt Harr was the loser.

Chapman 15, UCSD 1--Jeff Morrison and Darren Nelson drove in four runs each and the Panthers collected 10 hits en route to the win at Hart Park. Rob Glisson got the win for Chapman (8-16).

Southern California College 11, LaVerne 7--Steve Overeem homered twice, doubled and drove in five runs to lead the Vanguards to the win at LaVerne. Brian Sullivan (4-1) got the win for SCC (13-8). Dean Harvey had four of the Vanguards 17 hits.

In nonconference community college action:

Golden West 5, L.A. Harbor 4--Eric Shirley went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run in the second inning to lead the Rustlers (8-9) to the win at L.A. Harbor in San Pedro. Larry Salaets, who allowed five hits in 7 innings, got the win.

In the Orange Coast College Tournament:

Orange Coast 12, Southwestern 10--The Pirates scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 10-10 tie and held on for the win, despite committing six errors.

Orange Coast 9, Kings River 5--Dave Staton’s two-run double sparked a four-run sixth inning as the Pirates (17-4) moved within one victory of winning the three-team tournament. Kings River plays Southwestern today at 11:30, with the winner meeting the Pirates at 2:30 p.m.

John Dishon pitched a complete game to get the victory, allowing six hits and striking out 12.

In the West Los Angeles Tournament:

Rancho Santiago 12, Ventura 2--Matt Beltran was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Ruben Gonzales was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs to lead the Dons to the win in Culver City. David Salcido (4-0) pitched five innings and got the win.
