Evans Accepts Pitt Coaching Job, and Boston College Selects O’Brien

Paul Evans, who guided Navy to three consecutive 20-victory seasons, including a 30-5 record this season, was named basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh Wednesday.

In another development, Boston College chose former player Jim O’Brien to coach the Eagles, succeeding Gary Williams, who moved to Ohio State. O’Brien, 35, compiled a 67-51 record in four years as head coach at St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Evans, 41, said his first task will be to instill at Pitt some of the discipline that his Naval Academy players accepted as routine. Evans reportedly agreed to a four-year contract that will pay him about $800,000, or four times what he was making at Navy. The compensation includes radio and television show income that won’t come from university funds.

Navy won its second consecutive Colonial Athletic Conference championship this season and was 119-60 in Evans’ six seasons as coach. The Midshipmen were 80-19 the last three seasons after recording just five winning seasons in 18 years before Evans’ arrival.
