NHL Roundup : Gainey Gains Canadiens a Tie

Bob Gainey tapped in a rebound at 5:59 of the third period as the Montreal Canadiens snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-3 tie against the Boston Bruins Thursday night at Boston.

Montreal retained sole possession of second place behind Quebec in the Adams Division with 81 points. Boston has 79, Buffalo 78 and Hartford 77.

In overtime, the Bruins’ Ray Bourque fired a 30-foot slap shot that hit the post to goalie Patrick Roy’s right and bounced away.

Buffalo 1, Philadelphia 0--Rookie goaltender Jacques Cloutier stopped 30 shots to post his first career shutout, and Gil Perreault scored his 20th goal of the season as the Sabres squeezed past the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Buffalo moved one point ahead of idle Hartford in the race for the fourth and final Adams Division playoff spot, and the loss left Philadelphia one point behind first-place Washington in the Patrick Division.

New Jersey 1, St. Louis 0--Greg Adams broke a scoreless tie with 2:18 left at East Rutherford, N.J., and Devil goalie Sam St. Laurent, called up earlier in the day from the minor leagues, shut out the Blues in his first NHL start.

The defeat kept St. Louis from tying Chicago for the Norris Division lead.
