Truck Hit by Train in Mexico; 28 Dead

United Press International

At least 28 people were killed Saturday when the truck in which they were riding was rammed by a train as they drove to an Easter service, authorities said.

A federal highway police spokesman said most of the dead were trapped in the twisted steel of the truck. The accident took place early Saturday on a highway near the central city of Irapuato, 270 miles north of Mexico City, when the driver of the truck attempted to cross a set of tracks ahead of two coupled train engines.

Officials said the passengers were traveling to Cerro del Cubilete, a mountainous region where Easter services are held at an enormous stone statue of Jesus Christ to conclude Holy Week.
