Scholarship winners from 67 Orange County public and private high schools will take part today in a leadership seminar at Chapman College in Orange.

Irvine Co. President Thomas S. Nielsen said that the 67 seniors are first-tier winners of $500 scholarships in the Irvine Co.’s fourth annual Leadership Awards Program.

“The Leadership Awards Program is an effort to award those outstanding high school students whose leadership qualities have been demonstrated through their school activities and community involvement,” Nielsen said. He explained that student selections were based on scholastic performance, school and community activities, leadership qualities and communication skills.

The seminar today is designed to give the students “an opportunity to meet with Orange County civic, business and government leaders and discuss important issues facing the county involving water, hazardous waste and transportation,” an Irvine Co. statement said.

Committees of civic and government leaders, after today’s seminar, will interview the 67 students and select 15 as semifinalists. Those 15 will receive an additional $1,000 scholarship from the Irvine Co., and the five finalists, who will be named in May, will be awarded another $2,000 each from the company.
