Mountain Lion Hunting Proposed

Share

The state Fish and Game Commission will meet in San Diego Monday to discuss whether to approve a hunting season on mountain lions.

The commissioners will consider proposals by hunters and preservationists on how to establish a season, said Pat Moore, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game. In January, new legislation allowed the department to establish a hunting season for mountain lions.

There are about 5,000 of the cats in California, about twice as many as 14 years ago when the state made it illegal to hunt them, Moore said.

The meeting will be in the auditorium of the State Building, 1310 Front St. A decision on the hunting season will be made April 25 at a commission meeting in Long Beach.
