Crude oil spilled from a broken Mobil Oil pipeline in Granada Hills found its way into the Los Angeles River before work crews were able to contain it in the vicinity of Dodger Stadium, 30 miles away. Cleanup crews originally hoped to contain the spill at the Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, but by the time they arrived a large amount of oil had already flowed into the Los Angeles River. The crews then raced ahead of the spill and were finally able to intercept it with floating booms at Riverside Drive and the Pasadena Freeway. Fire officials estimated the original spill at 4,000 to 20,000 gallons.
