A La Jolla cultural zone encompassing the properties of half a dozen venerable institutions was formally adopted Tuesday by the San Diego City Council.

The zone covers about five square blocks south of the La Jolla downtown area and includes the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, Bishop’s School, two churches, the La Jolla Woman’s Club and the city recreation center. Under provisions of the cultural zone, zoning and development standards were relaxed to allow the nonprofit groups to develop their properties to the fullest, but uses in the zone were restricted to cultural and related purposes.

The zone was approved by the City Council at a March 18 hearing in La Jolla, after residents argued that safeguards were needed to prevent sale of the land for more profitable uses and loss of the historic buildings which house the present cultural and religious groups.
