A murder suspect knocked on the gates of San Quentin Prison, saying “I surrender,” before police found his alleged victim, authorities said. Claude Whitmore, 45, was held on suspicion of murdering his bride of four days, Sgt. Dan Murray of the Oakland Police Department said. Whitmore, wearing only undershorts, appeared at the prison gates, putting his hands in the air and offering to surrender to startled guards, who notified Oakland police. The body of Debra Cotton, 34, was found in Whitmore’s Oakland home, across San Francisco Bay. She had been strangled.
