Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations said that the contents of a U.N. war crimes file on Kurt Waldheim justify further investigation of the former U.N. secretary general’s activities as a German army officer in World War II. “It cannot be said that the matter can be laid to rest,” Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters after spending more than an hour at the U.N. archives office, where the file had been kept under seal. He said he is sending a copy to Israel for detailed study. Waldheim has repeatedly denied any involvement in Nazi atrocities.
