A federal judge set a May 12 trial date in the United States Football League’s $1.32-billion antitrust suit against the National Football League.

A lawyer for the USFL urged the judge not to bother with a trial and to rule in favor of the three-year-old league that for the first time will be playing in the fall this year, opposite the NFL.

Arguing that the established NFL has frozen out competitors by making deals with all three television networks, the USFL asked U.S. District Judge Peter K. Leisure to grant it a summary judgment in the case, meaning that the new league would win without having to go before a jury.
