TRUTH IN ADVERTISING DEPT.: When someone puts together a guitar wizardry Hall of Fame, they’ll have to make room for the Ventures. So fans would normally rejoice at the news that there’s a new double album out called “The Best of the Ventures,” with nearly all of the group’s classic songs. The bad news is that the package, on Compleat Records (distributed by PolyGram), contains second-rate rerecordings that were made by the group in 1980, not during its glory days. Even worse news: There’s no disclaimer noting this information anywhere on the package. . . . Meanwhile, Bill Haley’s Comets have returned with a new album called “We’re Back.” Unfortunately, Bill Haley himself isn’t back--the rock pioneer died in 1981 and doesn’t make any appearances on the current album. The “new” Comets are led by singer Joey Rand, the only original Comet still with the group. The album, just out from Moon Track Records, features rerecorded versions of several Haley hits as well as new material.
