The Region : Rugby Meet Triggers Campus Uprising
Bonfires were touched off in the street, sheriff’s deputies and fire personnel were pelted with rocks and bottles, and at least one automobile was overturned in the aftermath of the annual rugby tournament at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Sheriff’s deputies who moved into the Isla Vista community near the university arrested 18 people on charges ranging from failure to disperse on command to throwing an object into a motor vehicle while breaking up a crowd of 2,000 students and onlookers gathered in the street. Deputies estimated damage to firefighting equipment at $2,000, but said no estimate of damage to private property was immediately available.
