Sturgeon, 24, Fatally Injured in Crash at Ascot
Kirk Sturgeon, 24, of Hawthorne, was fatally injured in a crash during the sprint-car main event Saturday night at Ascot Park in Gardena. Sturgeon’s car hit the wall on the 12th lap of 30-lap feature.
Sturgeon was taken unconscious to Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Carson and died shortly before midnight. Sturgeon had been racing for about six years. This was his 34th feature race. On March 29, he had beaten Bubby Jones in a heat race.
The fatality was the first at Ascot Park since the summer of 1983, when Larry Mackey, a 45-year-old rookie, was killed in a multicar accident in a semi-main event.
Sturgeon leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Sturgeon of Hawthorne, and a sister, Kelly. Steve Sturgeon is a police officer in Hawthorne.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Douglas Mortuary, 500 E. Imperial, El Segundo.
