MORE TICKET SERIES FOR HOLLYWOOD BOWL SEASON

Additional subscription series, including Jazz at the Bowl and a five-concert Virtuoso series, have been announced for the 1986 season at Hollywood Bowl, the 65th year of summer concerts at the landmark amphitheater.

Sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn., the Virtuoso series will include performances by flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal (July 9), duo-pianists Katia and Marielle Labeque (July 30), violinist Itzhak Perlman (Aug. 13), the Israel Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Mehta (Aug. 20), and the Bowl debut of the English male vocal ensemble, the King’s Singers (Sept. 10).

Jazz at the Bowl enters its seventh summer this year, offering five events on Wednesday nights. Opening the series July 16 will be Woody Herman and his Young Thundering Herd, celebrating a 50th anniversary. Oscar Peterson and the Count Basie Orchestra appear at the Bowl on July 23. Sammy Davis Jr. performs at the Aug. 6 event, along with drummer Buddy Rich and his band. Singer Ella Fitzgerald appears Aug. 27 and singer Mel Torme closes the season Sept. 3.

The L.A. Philharmonic Institute Orchestra, a training ensemble again convening at Cal State Northridge for its six-week session, will again give a three-concert Sunday Sunset series at 7:30 p.m. July 13, July 27 and Aug. 10.

The Institute Orchestra, recently the recipient of a grant from the E. Nakamichi Foundation, will be conducted at these events by its artistic director, Sir Charles Groves, and by Otto Werner Mueller and Philharmonic music director Andre Previn. Groves will lead a concert performance of Beethoven’s opera, “Fidelio” on July 27.

Again this year, a four-concert, preseason week will precede the 10-week subscription season, beginning July 8. The preseason agenda will include two Tchaikovsky concerts, a concert at which the Philharmonic and Philharmonic Institute Orchestra will play together, and the traditional Fourth of July fireworks concert.

As announced earlier, the 10-week subscription season will continue through Sept. 13. Conducting the L.A. Philharmonic during the season will be its music director, Andre Previn, plus Paavo Berglund, Ivan Fischer, Gunther Herbig, Kent Nagano, Lawrence Foster, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman, John Williams, John Lanchbery and Erich Kunzel, among others.
