Share

Five schools in the San Gabriel Valley are among 32 semifinalists from Los Angeles County in the statewide Distinguished School Award competition. The awards are given for excellence in overall educational quality and have been called “one of the highest honors that can be received by a school” by the state Department of Education. There are 257 semifinalists statewide, and 70 will receive distinguished school designation when the competition ends in June.

The local semifinalist schools are Charles D. Jones School in Baldwin Park, Foothills Junior High in Arcadia, Monrovia High School, South Pasadena Junior High School and Ynez Elementary School in Alhambra.

Schools were nominated on the basis of improvements in CAP basic skills scores over the last three years and were then judged in 18 categories, including programs aimed at improving the quality of education.
