Merchants in Carlsbad were grumbling Wednesday after news that reconstruction of a highway bridge that carries tourist traffic into town will not be complete until late June.

In a report to the City Council, city engineers said the $2.4-million project to replace a bridge along Old Highway 101 has been delayed two months by rainy weather and high surf. The bridge, which crosses the mouth of Agua Hedionda Lagoon, was closed in October and originally was due to reopen May 1.

Since it closed, traffic has been diverted along Interstate 5. Merchants in Carlsbad’s downtown village commercial district say they have experienced a drop in business because of the detour.
