Victims of a disfiguring illness known as Elephant Man’s disease apparently can live longer, healthier lives than commonly believed, researchers said. About 100,000 people in the United States have the disease, called neurofibromatosis. It occurs in an estimated one in every 3,000 births--making it more common than muscular dystrophy, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
