President’s Volunteer Awards Given

The 1986 President’s Volunteer Action Awards has selected Gloria Allred and Security Pacific National Bank of Los Angeles as recipients from more than 2,300 nominations in 10 categories.

Citations also were awarded to several Southern California individuals and organizations, including the following:

Marian Newman Gibbons of Hollywood, who founded Hollywood Heritage in 1980. The organization’s efforts have resulted in Hollywood Boulevard being declared a National Historical District and conversion of the old DeMille barn, where Cecil B. DeMille’s first feature was produced in 1913, into a film museum.

The Andrus Volunteer Program of Los Angeles, initiated in 1973 at USC’s Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center to involve the elderly in university research and demonstration projects. The program’s recent thrust has been to find ways to help care givers of older people, thus allowing them to remain at home instead of being institutionalized.

The Deforest Chapter Neighborhood Assn. of Long Beach, whose volunteers have transformed a city park in a 40-year-old neighborhood into a nature trail and widlife sanctuary. The association also conducts clean-up programs, monitors community problems in parks and public buildings and aids elderly and handicapped individuals with maintenance chores.

The American Youth Symphony Board of Los Angeles, which annually raises nearly $140,000 for the orchestra’s free concert series and scholarships for deserving students.

The AFL-CIO Central Labor Council of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, which involves more than 120 volunteers in distributing food to 3,000 families a month. In addition, union members have donated time to build and refurbish shelter and emergency homes for families in need.
