The Region : Drunk Driver Gets 11 Years in Prison

Former elementary school teacher Robert Scott Carleton, 24, was sentenced to nearly 11 years in state prison on two counts of vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving and one count of felony hit-and-run stemming from an April, 1984, freeway accident in which two young women were killed and a third injured. In a jury trial last month, Carleton admitted having consumed five to seven margaritas at a San Diego restaurant before the accident, in which he reportedly rear-ended a car driven by Jill Fehrenbach, now 20. Fehrenbach’s vehicle was forced off the road and smashed into a tree, killing passengers Paige Roark, 18, and Teresa Motta, 20. “What we had here,” Superior Court Judge Jack Levitt said in imposing sentence, “was a total disregard for the welfare and safety of others.”
