Brisbane, the capital of the state of Queensland in Australia, made an unprecedented move to push its bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics by announcing that it would grant a $20-million travel subsidy to competitors.
The money would go toward reducing the cost of air fare for athletes and officials to Australia, Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson said.
