Oceanside Gives OK for a New Pier

OCEANSIDE — Reconstruction of the storm-battered Oceanside municipal fishing pier will begin in June as the result of the City Council’s approval of a contract for the project.
By a unanimous vote, the council Wednesday awarded Crowley Construction Inc. of Long Beach a $2.6-million contract to demolish the timber pier and erect a 1,600-foot concrete structure in its place. Good and Roberts Inc., a Carlsbad firm, was hired under a $344,653 contract to build a restaurant, lifeguard tower, restrooms and a commercial structure on the new pier.
The $4.1-million project is being funded by a loan from the state Coastal Conservancy, grants from various state and federal sources and about $766,820 in park fees paid by Oceanside developers.
The pier was the longest structure of its type on the West Coast when it was built in 1947, but storm-driven waves have reduced it to half its length during the last decade. City officials view the reconstruction, which will be complete by July, 1987, as critical to their efforts to attract tourist business.
