A 70-year-old man died Friday after drinking tainted wine, bringing to 24 the number of people killed by poisoned wine since last month, authorities said.

The man, identified as Augusto Costigliolo, was brought to San Martino Hospital four days ago suffering from severe poisoning. Police said Costigliolo had drunk wine containing excessive amounts of methanol, or wood alcohol.

Some vintners have added dangerously high amounts of methanol to cheap wines to strengthen their alcohol content.
